Armadillos are small mammals having a leathery armor shell. All Armadillo species are native to the Americas. They are known to inhabit a variety of environments. The Nine-banded Armadillo is most common in the central southernmost states, particularly Texas.

Armadillos use their sharp claws to dig for food and to dig their dens. They prefer to dig burrows in wet soil near creeks and streams. They feed mainly on insects. Armadillos have poor vision.
